Squeakastination
What It Means
Squeakastination is a neologism describing a form of procrastination-driven productivity. The squeakastinator does things not because they are the most important things but because doing them is preferable to doing the thing they are actually avoiding. The avoided thing "squeaks" in the background - it creates a low-level anxiety that drives action toward other things.
The term is a portmanteau of "squeaky wheel" and "procrastination," and it describes a pattern that is neither purely productive (the right things are not being done) nor purely unproductive (things are being done). It is a form of motivated avoidance that produces side-effect work.
When It's Useful
Squeakastination has a paradoxical usefulness. The squeakastinator who avoids their main obligation by doing minor productive tasks still does minor productive tasks. They clean their desk when they should be writing. They answer emails when they should be making the difficult call. But the desk gets clean and the emails get answered.
This is different from pure procrastination, where avoidance is occupied by genuinely unproductive activities (social media, television). Squeakastination re-routes avoidance energy into secondary productive work.
For people who are stuck on a primary task - genuinely unable to proceed for reasons other than avoidance - the squeakastination energy can clear the secondary task backlog that might otherwise grow while the primary obstruction is addressed.
When It's Harmful
Squeakastination becomes costly when the primary avoided task is genuinely important and the secondary tasks used for avoidance are less important. The cleared desk is not worth the delayed major project. The answered emails are not worth the postponed difficult conversation.
The recognition of squeakastination is the first step to redirecting it. If you can identify that you are in squeakastination mode - completing secondary tasks to avoid a primary one - you can decide whether to accept the behavior (the secondary tasks genuinely need doing) or to interrupt it (the primary task needs to be addressed directly).
